Houthi Attacks Target Two Merchant Ships in the Red Sea

Feb 06, 2024 19:19

On February 5, 2024, two merchant vessels faced assaults from Houthi militant forces in the Red Sea. The ships involved were the 'Star Nasia', journeying from Norfolk, Virginia, to Visakhapatnam, and the 'Morning Tide', which was operating in the same region. The assaults occurred between approximately 1:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Arabian Standard Time, as Iranian-backed Houthi groups launched six anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs) from their controlled territories in Yemen towards the Southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. During the incident, three of the missiles were aimed at the 'Star Nasia', which was navigating the Gulf of Aden. At about 3:20 a.m. local time, the vessel reported a blast in proximity to its hull, resulting in minor damage but fortunately no personnel injuries. Another missile struck the water near the ship around 2 p.m. with no repercussions. In a timely defense action, the USS 'Laboon' (DDG 58), which was in proximity to the 'Star Nasia', successfully intercepted and destroyed a third missile at 4:30 p.m. Despite the episode, the 'Star Nasia' sustained its seafaring capability and is on track to reach Visakhapatnam by February 17. Meanwhile, the remaining three missiles appeared to target the 'Morning Tide' (IMO: 9320506). Fortunately, these missiles landed harmlessly in the vicinity of the ship without causing any damage or injuries, allowing the 'Morning Tide' to continue its voyage unimpeded.
