Heroic Rescue at Bokna Fjord: Ferry Saves Castaway After Mayday
On the morning of April 28, 2016, a fishing vessel encountered trouble and issued a Mayday call before sinking near Arsvågen. This distress signal was promptly picked up by Rogaland Radio, prompting a swift response from the nearby ferry, 'Stavangerfjord.' The dedicated crew launched a rescue boat and quickly reached the castaway who was adrift in the waters of Bokna Fjord. Thanks to their swift and professional actions, the lone skipper was rescued in good condition. Fortunately, a Sea King rescue helicopter, which had been dispatched from Sola to assist, was stood down as the rescue was successfully completed. Emergency Incident on Stavangerfjord Ferry at Mortavika
On August 9, 2013, an alarming incident occurred on the Stavangerfjord, a ferry operating on the Mortavika-Arsvågen route. Passengers were startled by a loud bang, quickly followed by the sight of smoke billowing from the ferry's smokestack. In response, the crew made the swift decision to turn the vessel around and head back to Mortavika. All 16 vehicles on board had to back off the ferry deck as they evacuated. Fortunately, the small fire was extinguished shortly after the incident, but the Stavangerfjord was taken out of service and positioned at Mortavika for further inspection. While the two other ferries on the route continued their operations, many vehicles were left waiting in line at Mortavika due to the incident. Weather and Technical Issues Lead to Ferry Cancellations in Norway
On December 13, 2011, ferry departures from Arsvågen at 10:00, 11:00, and 12:00 a.m., as well as from Mortavika at 09:30, 10:30, 11:30, and 12:30 a.m., were canceled due to technical difficulties and inclement weather conditions. This disruption follows the out-of-service status of the 'Stavangerfjord,' which requires repairs, prompting the need for the 'Bergensfjord' to step in as its replacement. However, on December 12, the 'Bergensfjord' encountered issues with its pump and was also taken for repairs, which delayed its deployment. Fortunately, the pump issues were resolved overnight, allowing the vessel to depart from Halhjem. Once the 'Bergensfjord' is operational, the ferry services are expected to return to normalcy. Nonetheless, a fierce storm on the morning of the 13th cast doubt on this expectation. The 'Stavangerfjord' is projected to remain out of commission for three to four days while technicians work to diagnose and repair the problems related to its gas installation, prompting the need for its temporary withdrawal from service.
