The Stena-Drillmax: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

Cairn Energy has announced significant progress in its exploration endeavors off the coast of Senegal, with the drillship Stena DrillMAX successfully completing drilling and wireline logging at the FAN South-1 exploration well. Situated in the South Fan prospect, this well has yielded promising results, uncovering hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs in the Lower Cretaceous geological layer, alongside valuable oil samples. Preliminary assessments indicate that the extracted oil boasts an API gravity of 31°. This offshore venture took place in a water depth of 2,175 meters (7,136 feet), approximately 90 kilometers (56 miles) from the mainland, within the Sangomar Deep Offshore block and 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) southeast of the previously drilled FAN-1 well. The FAN South-1 well achieved a total depth of 5,343 meters (17,529 feet), having focused on both Upper Cretaceous and Lower Cretaceous turbidite fan prospects—similar to the previous FAN-1 findings. Following completion, plans are in motion to P&A (plug and abandon) the well. Looking ahead, the Stena DrillMAX is set to embark on drilling the SNE North (Sirius) prospect, located 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) north of the SNE-1 discovery well, marking it as the farthest northern exploration site in the concession to date. This next phase aims to tap into significant reserves exceeding 80 million barrels, spread across multiple targets, in a water depth of 900 meters (2,953 feet), with an anticipated total depth of 2,800 meters (9,186 feet).
