Technical Glitch Delays Disembarkation on Stena Edda

Sep 07, 2022 10:27

On September 6, 2022, 423 passengers aboard the 'Stena Edda', which operates between Belfast and Liverpool, experienced an unexpected delay when the vessel docked in Birkenhead at approximately 6:15 a.m. A malfunction in the stern ramp mechanism left passengers unable to disembark for over four hours. The technical issue stemmed from a cleat that failed to unlock, effectively keeping the ramp stuck and passengers held up on board. To ease the inconvenience, the crew provided a complimentary breakfast. Thankfully, by 11 a.m., repairs were successfully completed, resolving the situation. The Stena Edda is anticipated to regain its schedule by the morning of September 7, as the team works to make up for lost time.

Captain of Cargo Ship Fined £6,384 for Reckless Navigation in Belfast Lough

Aug 27, 2021 22:29

Kolapi Utime, a 64-year-old master of the cargo vessel 'Scot Leader', has been penalized with a fine of £6,384 following a perilous near miss with the 'Stena Edda' in Belfast Lough. The incident, which unfolded in March 2021, was reviewed by the Southampton Magistrates' Court. It was revealed that Utime maneuvered his vehicle directly in front of the 'Stena Edda', which was carrying 503 passengers at the time. Testimony indicated that Utime increased the speed of the 'Scot Leader', which is operated by Scotline, thereby heightening the risk of a collision. Notably, he ill-advisedly directed the 'Stena Edda' to change its course to port, a move that was sharply criticized by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) as being "contrary to good seamanship and collision avoidance practices." Meanwhile, the Stena ferry had already commenced a starboard turn to avert a potential crash. Although Utime acknowledged his actions, he argued that his focus was diverted to another approaching ferry, the 'Stena Superfast VIII'. Mark Flavell from the MCA emphasized the gravity of the situation, calling it a "dangerous scenario" stemming from Utime’s blatant disregard for the collision avoidance regulations. He stated, "There could have been disastrous consequences. The MCA will always seek to take necessary actions, prosecuting those seafarers who endanger others by ignoring maritime laws. Such offenses are intolerable, and those who refuse to comply with rules and regulations will face serious repercussions."
