Historic Swedish Registration of Suezmax Tanker Stena Sunrise Signals New Era

Aug 01, 2025 10:27

In a landmark event held in Singapore, Stena Bulk proudly announced the registration of the 'Stena Sunrise' under the Swedish flag, marking a significant milestone as it is the first Suezmax tanker to be registered in Sweden in modern history. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Sweden's ambassador to Singapore, Anders Sjöberg, alongside Johan Zander, head of Stena Bulk Singapore, who together facilitated the ceremonial transfer of the Swedish flag to the ship’s crew. 'We are proud that Stena Sunrise is now officially sailing under the Swedish flag and that we were able to celebrate this in Singapore,' stated Erik Hånell, CEO of Stena Bulk. He emphasized that this achievement was made possible through robust collaboration with Swedish authorities and maritime unions. Historically, Swedish shipyards were a powerhouse in building large crude oil tankers during the 1970s and 1980s, although these vessels were typically delivered under foreign flags. Recently, Sweden has seen a decline in its presence in the prominent tanker segments. Noteworthy exceptions, such as the ULCC 'TT Nanny' (1978–1984) and the VLCC 'Vanadis' (early 1990s), were rare and brief. With the induction of the 'Stena Sunrise,' Sweden reestablishes its foothold in the Suezmax arena. This vessel is just the beginning; Stena Bulk plans to register four additional Suezmax vessels— 'Stena Superior,' 'Stena Suede,' 'Stena Surprise,' and 'Stena Sunshine'— in the Swedish fleet in the forthcoming months, contingent on commercial and operational timelines. Tanker Heroically Rescues 16 Shipwreck Survivors in Caribbean

Aug 26, 2013 12:33

In a remarkable display of seamanship, the tanker 'Stena Sunrise' successfully rescued 16 crew members from the f/v 'Halo' who had been adrift for four harrowing days in the Caribbean Sea. The incident unfolded after the fishing vessel sank due to an intense fire that swept through its engine room, leaving the crew to abandon ship. Among the survivors were 13 Chinese and 3 Myanmarese sailors who found themselves clinging to a life raft. On the night of August 21, 2013, the crew managed to fire off two distress flares, signaling their dire situation. Just two nautical miles away, the captain of 'Stena Sunrise' noticed a faint light while on the bridge, which was later confirmed to be a distress signal when the second red flare launched into the night sky. At the time, the 'Stena Sunrise' was en route to China, approximately 150 nautical miles away from Trinidad and Tobago, when the captain opted to adjust the vessel's course towards the source of the signals. Demonstrating exceptional skill, he maneuvered the tanker within 20 meters of the life raft. Following permission from the Trinidad and Tobago Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, a heaving line was sent to the survivors, enabling the raft to be pulled alongside. A ladder was then lowered to facilitate the evacuation. The entire rescue operation took about 90 minutes, during which the crew of 'Stena Sunrise' provided critical assistance in transferring the survivors to the fishing vessel 'Shinshu Maru 62', which had been dispatched by local authorities. Remarkably, the life raft was found to be in good condition and was also brought onboard as part of the operation.
