DFDS Strengthens Fleet with Acquisition of 'Stena Vinga'
In a significant move to enhance its operations, DFDS has officially acquired the 'Stena Vinga' from Stena Line, transitioning the vessel from a chartered asset to a permanent addition to its fleet. This acquisition comes after the 'Stena Vinga' has been serving on the Jersey route since its launch in March 2025. Following the acquisition, the ferry will undergo a reflagging process to operate under the UK flag and will receive a new name to better reflect DFDS's branding. In a bid to bolster its services on the Jersey-UK and France routes, DFDS is set to create approximately 70 new job opportunities, including positions for cadets and apprentices. The finalization of this deal is expected to take place in November 2026, marking a pivotal step in DFDS's growth strategy.
DFDS Prepares for New Jersey Ferry Route with Stena Vinga Docking Practices
Starting next week, DFDS will officially launch its ferry service to Jersey, taking over from Condor Ferries. The vessel 'Stena Vinga', featuring a substantial capacity of 1,538 lane meters, will be the star of the route connecting Jersey and Portsmouth. Previously, this ferry operated between Frederikshavn and Gothenburg, among other routes. In preparation for its new journey, the 'Stena Vinga', which has been chartered by DFDS, is set to conduct vital docking maneuvers in both Portsmouth and Jersey from March 18-20, 2025. This practice is essential to ensure smooth operations as the ferry is scheduled to commence service on March 28, 2025. Stena Vinga Secures Charter with DFDS for 2025 Voyage
Stena Line is poised to enhance its maritime operations with the charter of the 'Stena Vinga', set to commence in March 2025 and conclude by the year's end. This vessel is slated to serve DFDS on a crucial route between Portsmouth and Jersey, with its inaugural voyage on March 28. The 'Stena Vinga' will operate five weekly rotations, featuring evening departures from Jersey and morning departures from Portsmouth during the peak season. In December, it became official that DFDS clinched a 15-year tender for this service, marking the conclusion of Condor Ferries' 60-year legacy in serving Jersey. As part of this agreement, DFDS will deploy three vessels: one roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ship and two high-speed craft. Additionally, DFDS has ambitious plans to invest in three new vessels over the next six years to bolster its fleet. Interestingly, the 'Stena Vinga' will intermittently return to Stena Line’s routes, stepping in to substitute other vessels undergoing maintenance. In exchange, DFDS is committed to providing replacement ships during the times that 'Stena Vinga' is not fulfilling its service obligations. This vessel has been regularly positioned on the Gothenburg to Fredrikshamn route but has also served as a flexible replacement within Stena Line’s network since it began operations in 2018.
