On May 13, 2014, the United States Coast Guard took the precautionary measure of detaining the vessel 'Strategic Synergy' in Portland due to several significant safety violations that need immediate attention. This incident occurred during the ship's maiden voyage, which began after the vessel was constructed in China on April 23, 2014. Targeting a cargo load of grain in Portland before heading to Ecuador, the new Singapore-flagged ship was found lacking essential safety protocols during a routine inspection conducted by the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit. Notably, the inspection revealed that the 'Strategic Synergy's' rescue boat failed to start despite multiple attempts, and the crew had not conducted any mandated scheduled inspections or maintenance since leaving China. Additionally, the steering pump of the vessel lost power during the Coast Guard's operational assessment, rendering it unable to safely navigate in open waters. These discrepancies classify the 'Strategic Synergy' as substandard according to both U.S. and international maritime regulations, affirming its unsuitability for a seafaring journey. Following these findings, Coast Guard inspectors are collaborating with the ship's flag state, crew members, owners, and managing crew to rectify these violations before the vessel can load its cargo and resume its journey.
