Cargo Ship Aids in Human Trafficking Rescue Off the Coast of Thira

Sep 09, 2024 11:25

On the evening of September 5, 2024, a critical operation unfolded off the coast of Thira when the Greek Coast Guard sought assistance from the local Port Authority for a distressed vessel located 12 nautical miles south of Anafi. Responding swiftly, a patrol vessel, alongside the passenger boat 'Melina' and the cargo ship 'Summer Sea', which was navigating from Maentyluoto to Iskenderun, made their way to the scene. During their search, a Polish sailing vessel was identified, prompting the 'Melina' to come alongside and rescue four individuals, consisting of 23 men, 3 women, and 17 minors. After safely transporting them to the port of Thira, the port authorities conducted a thorough disembarkation. However, two individuals, aged 22 and 25, were apprehended by authorities for their involvement as human traffickers, facing charges under article 83 of Law 3386/05 regarding illegal entry into the country, article 25 of Law 5038/23 for facilitation of such acts, and article 47 of the Penal Code for association with illicit activities. Additionally, the vessel linked to the traffickers was subsequently confiscated, highlighting the ongoing battle against human trafficking in the region.
