The Norwegian Coastguard has initiated a significant investigation into the wreck of the German submarine 'U 864', which lies submerged off the coast of Fedje in Hordaland. This operation aims to assess the condition of the submarine's keels, particularly the stern region, including the critical cooling boxes and mercury containers. For this mission, the 'Geosund' vessel has been enlisted by DOF Subsea to assist with the exploration. The 'Geosund' arrived at the designated wreck site on the evening of January 7, 2014, where it set about deploying underwater sensors to track sediment dispersion in the area. On January 8, the team was slated to complete the establishment of environmental monitoring to facilitate access to the submarine's keel region. This involved the careful relocation of smaller wreckage and sediment to glean insights into the wreck's condition while facing challenging weather, with wave heights reaching four meters at the site. However, forecasts indicate an expected improvement in conditions. This operation marks the final survey mission related to assessing options for safely uplifting loads from the wreck and initiating its subsequent cover-up. Upon completion of this mission, results will be handed over to the Ministry of External Quality Assurance as part of the National Model for Quality Assurance.
