Arrival of New Lock Gates Marks Milestone in Panama Canal Expansion
In a significant development for the Panama Canal expansion project, the first shipment of four giant lock gates has arrived in Panama aboard the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, STX Sun Rise. The arrival was celebrated by Panama President Ricardo Martinelli and members of the Panama Canal Authority board of directors at the Atlantic entrance of the canal in Davis. These massive gates, designed by IV Groep from the Netherlands, will be crucial for the new locks that are part of the ongoing expansion. Manufactured by the Italian shipyard Cimolai SpA under the direction of the construction consortium GUPC, the gates' production began in October 2011. Each gate is engineered to measure up to 57.6 meters in length, 10 meters in width, and 33 meters in height, with a staggering weight of 4,200 tonnes per gate. In total, the project will see the creation of 16 gates, using approximately 49,000 tonnes of steel. Two of the gates are designated for the Atlantic side and two for the Pacific side, marking a significant step forward in enhancing the capabilities of the Panama Canal.
