What Crew Members Say About Sunbelt-Spirit

In a remarkable display of international maritime collaboration, two Canadian men were rescued from a life raft approximately 100 miles off the coast of Costa Rica on the morning of December 11, 2010. The sailors from Winfield, British Columbia, found themselves in peril while traveling from Costa Rica to Nicaragua aboard their 42-foot catamaran on December 9. After abandoning their vessel, they activated their Emergency Position-Indicating Radiobeacon (EPIRB) and sought refuge in the life raft. This heroic rescue operation involved coordination among multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, and the governments of Costa Rica and Canada. The EPIRB signal was first received by the USCG Atlantic Area command center located in Portsmouth, Virginia, before being transferred to the 11th Coast Guard District command center in Alameda, California, at 2:30 p.m. for further coordination of the emergency response. As the controllers directed the 'Sunbelt Spirit' to adjust its course toward the EPIRB signal's location, a C-130 Hercules aircrew was deployed to locate the distressed sailors. On December 11, at 10:35 a.m., the aircrew successfully pinpointed the signal's source to the life raft. The vital coordinates were then relayed to the 'Sunbelt Spirit,' which arrived on the scene at 11 a.m., successfully bringing the two men aboard and ensuring their safe return.
