Crew members aboard the general cargo vessel Sunmi are receiving compassionate support from Apostleship of the Sea (AoS) after a tragic incident involving Port of London pilot Gordon Coates. The pilot lost his life while boarding the ship in Gravesend Reach, England, on Wednesday evening, around 6:10 PM local time. The Sunmi, which is operated by Norway's Misje Rederi, was involved in this unfortunate event. In the aftermath of the incident, Wojciech Holub, AoS's chaplain for the Tilbury and Thames ports, provided immediate assistance to the ship's Russian crew on the night of the accident and again the following morning. Holub noted, "They were disturbed and deeply saddened as a result of the accident. There were no long conversations as they were busy, but our presence was much appreciated. We also provided them with means of communicating with their families.” Further support continued when the Sunmi docked at Pasajes Port in Spain earlier this week. AoS's port chaplain Jose Ignacio, accompanied by a Russian seafarer residing locally, visited the crew to ensure they received emotional care during this challenging time. In light of the incident, the Port of London Authority has launched an investigation into Coates' death, with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch also set to conduct a separate inquiry into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
