Bulk Carrier Rescues Atlantic Rowers During Challenging Crossing

Dec 18, 2013 13:03

On December 17, 2013, a dramatic rescue unfolded in the Atlantic Ocean when the bulk carrier 'Sunshine Bliss' came to the aid of two intrepid rowers, Ed Curtis from Conwy and his partner Nick Rees. The duo was participating in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, a grueling 3,000-mile journey from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua, when their boat capsized at approximately 3 p.m. The challengers, racing under the banner of Team Neas Energy, were aiming to raise an impressive Β£250,000 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Having already successfully raised Β£100,000, the rowers faced numerous hardships during the race, including a previous capsize incident off Gibraltar on December 15, where they managed to roll their boat twice before continuing. On December 17, however, they encountered more trouble. Their boat suffered damage during the capsizing, leading to concerns about safety. Unfortunately, the Coastguard was unable to trace them due to a malfunction in their tracking device. Luckily, a support vessel was in the vicinity and relayed a message to the 'Sunshine Bliss,' which was journeying from Vila do Conde to Gibraltar. The bulk carrier promptly altered its course and successfully retrieved the shaken rowers, ensuring their safe passage to the British territory of Gibraltar. Both Curtis and Rees expressed their disappointment and frustration over the turn of events, as they had dedicated two years of preparation to compete in this challenging race. Upon their arrival in Gibraltar, arrangements were made for the pair to fly back to London before completing their journey home. This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of oceanic adventures and the importance of maritime safety.
