Pioneering SCR NOx Removal System Trial Launched on NYK's Coal Carrier
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), in collaboration with Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI), Akasaka Diesels Limited, and Sakai Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to test a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) nitrogen oxide (NOx) removal system aboard its newly constructed bulk coal carrier, Initial Salute. The vessel, which was built by Oshima Shipbuilding, recently underwent shipboard trials to evaluate the efficiency of the SCR NOx removal equipment during its maiden voyage. After successful initial tests, which confirmed compliance with the Tier III NOx emission standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the decision was made to retain the SCR system for further operational tests. This innovative installation represents a significant development as it marks the world's inaugural trial of SCR NOx removal technology on a low-speed marine diesel engine, showcasing NYK Line's commitment to advancing environmental sustainability in maritime operations.
