Svealand Ferry Grounds in Krakhelle Sound, Prompting Rescue Efforts
On December 19, 2024, the ferry 'Svealand' encountered trouble when it ran aground in Krakhelle Sound close to Rysjedalsvika around 10:30 a.m. (Lat. 61.4766 Lng. 5.2836). The vessel was making its journey from Rørvik with a crew of seven members on board. Following the incident, the Central Rescue Service (HRS) received a distress notification at 3:38 p.m. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported and the situation did not result in any leaks or environmental pollution. As a precautionary measure, a rescue helicopter was dispatched, and the ferry 'Losna' altered its course to provide assistance. The 'Losna' successfully established a towing connection with 'Svealand' to stabilize the vessel until a tugboat arrived at 5 p.m. The tug then efficiently dislodged the ferry from its grounding and towed it to safety at Leirvik in Hyllestad, where it was securely docked by approximately 8:30 p.m. UTC. Preliminary investigations suggest that the grounding might have been caused by technical issues leading to a loss of propulsion.
