Rescue Mission: Distressed Cargo Ship 'Sylvia' Successfully Towed to Tallinn
On January 8, 2015, the cargo vessel 'Sylvia', carrying a load of cement and manned by a crew of seven, encountered a critical engine failure while navigating the Gulf of Finland, just south of Kalbådagrund off Porvoo. After losing power, the ship drifted but managed to anchor southeast of Kalbådagrund. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Helsinki was promptly notified of the situation. In response, the Coastguard mobilized resources including helicopters and the Coastguard vessel 'Turva' to prepare for a potential rescue operation. At the time of the incident, the region was experiencing strong winds reaching 12-14 meters per second, alongside waves rising to three meters high, presenting significant challenges for both the crew of the 'Sylvia' and the rescuers. By 8 p.m., the Estonian tug 'Pallas' commenced towing operations, with 'Turva' standing by to provide assistance if necessary. After a careful operation, the distressed cargo ship was successfully berthed at Palkasaare 36 in Tallinn on January 9 at 9:15 a.m., marking the conclusion of a tense evening and ensuring the safety of the crew and vessel.
Engine Room Incident on Freighter 'Sylvia' Linked to Overheated Pipe
On June 19, 2014, at approximately 6:06 p.m., a fire incident occurred in the engine room of the freighter 'Sylvia' at the port of Norrköping. This alarming situation prompted an immediate response from local fire services, with crews from three fire stations deploying seven fire engines and 19 firefighters to tackle the emergency. At the time of the incident, the vessel was docked at the Supra Quay, positioned west of the Händelö Bridge, following the unloading of a fertilizer cargo.
