B.C. Ferries Bids Farewell to the Historic 'Tachek' After 57 Years of Service

Jun 26, 2026 11:59

On June 26, 2026, the iconic 'Tachek', recognized as the second-oldest ferry in the B.C. Ferries fleet, sailed its final journey, marking the end of an impressive 57-year tenure. Only the 'Queen of New Westminster', constructed in 1964, holds a longer service history within the fleet. Following the retirement of the 'Tachek', the larger and more capable 'Island Nagalis' (IMO: 9900576) has taken over operations on the Whaletown (Cortes Island) to Heriot Bay (Quadra Island) route. The 'Tachek', known for its ability to carry 26 vehicles, is now succeeded by the 'Island Nagalis', which boasts a capacity of 47 cars, alongside an increase in passenger and crew capacity from 150 to 399. The 'Island Nagalis' commenced service in 2023, initially operating the route between Campbell River and Quadra Island (Quathiaski Cove). As the fleet continues to modernize, the 'Island Kwigwis' began providing service on the crucial Campbell River to Quadra Island route on June 21, facilitating the 'Island Nagalis' transition to replace the retired 'Tachek'.

Heroic Rescue by BC Ferries' Crew Saves Capsized Canoers

Nov 28, 2016 11:29

On November 27, 2016, at 11:46 a.m., the dedicated crews of the BC ferries "Tachek" and "Baynes Sound Connector" sprang into action following an emergency call regarding two canoeists who had found themselves in a perilous situation in Baynes Sound, located on the eastern side of Vancouver Island. These inter-island ferry services quickly deployed their small rescue boats to assist the stranded men. Impressively, the mobile operations boat (MOB) from the "Tachek" reached the canoeists just two minutes after the distress call was received. After the rescue, the two men were safely transferred to a Coast Guard vessel and subsequently transported to Buckley Bay hospital for further assistance. This swift response highlights the exceptional commitment of BC Ferries' crew members to ensuring maritime safety in their operational waters.
