Tug Engine Trouble Causes Delay in Delivery of Seikongen Wreck to Talcahuano

Aug 15, 2018 22:06

The delivery of the wrecked Chilean wellboat 'Seikongen' has been postponed due to engine issues experienced by the towing tug, 'Taltal'. This incident occurred on August 14, 2018, while the vessel was anchored in Ancud, situated north of Chiloé Island. The wellboat was anticipated to reach its destination at the port of Talcahuano by August 12, having set off from Chonchi near Castro in Chiloé during the night hours. To mitigate the situation, the tug 'Allipen' was dispatched from the Bío-Bío region to assist with the towing operation. However, the crews are facing challenging weather conditions and have opted to delay the journey until the weather improves. Moreover, approvals for the requisite certificates for the new tug must be obtained before proceeding. Complicating matters further, the Court of Appeals in Concepción has denied the 'Seikongen' permission to dock in Talcahuano until a 'Recurso de Protección'—a type of constitutional complaint asserting individuals' rights—has been processed. This complaint was filed last week by Talcahuano's mayor, Henry Campos. Inside the 'Seikongen', there are approximately 100 tons of decomposing salmon, producing hazardous hydrogen sulfide gas that poses severe health risks to humans. Mayor Carlos Gómez of Ancud has expressed his intention to file a corresponding complaint, demanding the immediate removal of the wellboat from their waters. Local fishermen and various organizations have also protested against the 'Seikongen's' presence in Ancud. Once it arrives in Talcahuano, the spoiled salmon is set to be transported by truck to a designated disposal facility located about 40 kilometers away in the city of Florida.
