Coast Guard and AMVER Vessels Come to Aid of Stranded Sailor After Five-Month Pacific Voyage

Nov 15, 2019 09:51

In a remarkable rescue operation, the US Coast Guard, along with vessels 'Umberty' and 'Tamesis', provided critical assistance to a 78-year-old sailor aboard his sailing vessel 'Mayfly', who found himself in dire straits during an extended five-month journey across the Pacific Ocean. This incident unfolded on October 29, 2019, when the mariner's brother informed the Coast Guard District 11 command center that his sibling had set sail from Japan in late May, expecting to reach San Francisco by August. Unfortunately, the absence of favorable winds postponed his arrival by two months, leading to a severe shortage of food and water. The Coast Guard's district watchstanders promptly coordinated with the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER), dispatching the 'Tamesis' to deliver essential rations to the beleaguered sailor. 'Tamesis' reached the distressed mariner and supplied him with food and water, fulfilling the urgent request. However, on November 4, the sailor found himself in trouble once again, battling heavy weather approximately 250 miles off the coast of Los Angeles. In response to his plea, the AMVER vessel 'Umberty' diverted its course to provide further rations. By November 13, the situation escalated as the mariner reported running low on supplies for a third time, now roughly 85 miles southwest of Point Vicente. He sought help not only for provisions but also for towing assistance. The Coast Guard Cutter 'Robert Ward' was then directed to tow the homemade sailboat back toward Oxnard. In the early hours of November 14, around 3:30 a.m., 'Robert Ward' successfully transferred the tow to a crew from Coast Guard Station Channel Islands Harbor. Aboard the 45-foot Response Boat-Medium, they towed the 'Mayfly' back to safety at Channel Islands Harbor. This series of cooperative efforts underscores the critical role played by the Coast Guard and AMVER vessels in maritime safety and rescue efforts.
