Working Conditions Aboard the Tauati-Ferry

On the morning of December 17, 2018, a critical incident occurred involving the 'Aremiti Ferry II' as the vessel was about to depart from the Vaiare wharf in Moorea. The stern ramp unexpectedly collapsed when a traction cable broke during the raising process. Fortunately, the loading operations had been completed, and there were no reported injuries among the passengers. To ensure continuity of service, the 'Aremiti 5' was promptly deployed as a temporary ferry, taking over the transportation route between Tahiti and Moorea. On November 4, 2017, the ferry 'Aremiti 2', operating on the Tahiti to Moorea route, experienced an engine malfunction approximately 20 minutes off the coast of Faa'a. The vessel set sail from Papeete wharf at 7:15 AM but encountered problems when one of its four engines failed as a result of water ingress. After some time, 'Aremiti 2' was able to continue its journey to Moorea, where necessary repairs were made at the Vaiare wharf. The ferry ultimately departed with a delay, resuming service at 11:00 AM. On March 7, 2014, the Aremiti Ferry 2 met with an unfortunate incident when it collided with the dock in Papeete around noon, sustaining considerable damage. As a result of this allision, the ferry was taken out of service for its route to Moorea. In its place, the Aremiti 5 stepped in to maintain the ferry schedule during the downtime for repairs. The Aremiti Ferry 2 was subsequently taken to the Shipyard South Pacific on March 8 for assessment and repairs. The incident revealed serious damage to the hull above the waterline, indicating that the ferry had docked at an excessive speed.
