Tragic Incident Claims Sailor's Life in Vejle Port

Mar 17, 2021 19:00

A somber incident occurred on March 16, 2021, as a 59-year-old Ukrainian crew member aboard the 'Solymar' tragically lost his life when a 15-ton hatch cover fell at South Quay in Vejle. While maintenance was underway, the hatch cover, which had been lifted by a crane, became loose and plummeted onto the deck where two crew members were positioning supports. One sailor narrowly escaped the falling object, while the other was not so fortunate. Emergency services and a helicopter responded swiftly to the distress call made at 8:54 a.m., but sadly, the crew member was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities on-site included the Danish police, accompanied by representatives from the Danish Working Environment Authority and the Danish Maritime Authority. Following the incident, the Danish Maritime Authority has detained the 'Solymar', preventing its departure from the port; as of March 18, the vessel remains berthed in Vejle.
