Ferry 'Tenacia' Resurfaces After Extensive Repairs Following July Fire
The ferry 'Tenacia,' owned by Isabella Grimaldi's Grimaldi Investments, is set to return to service after nearly ten months of repairs following a significant fire incident. The blaze ignited in the engine room on July 8, 2023, while the vessel was navigating north of Ibiza. Since the incident, the ship has undergone extensive repairs and modernization at the Nuova Meccanica Navale shipyard in Naples, where MSC holds a stake. With repairs now complete, 'Tenacia' is back under the management of its charterer, GNV, and is expected to re-enter service next summer.
Valencia Welcomes Disabled Ferry After Fire Incident
On the morning of July 9, the specialized rescue helicopter Helimer 207 successfully transferred three firefighters from the Generalitat onto the stricken ferry Tenacia to evaluate the urgent situation. Their primary task was to assess whether towing the disabled vessel back to the port of Valencia was feasible. Six additional firefighters joined the efforts later that day. The fire, which broke out in the ferry's engine room, sent smoke billowing up to deck 3, prompting a swift response from the firefighting teams who worked tirelessly through the night to extinguish the inferno. Meanwhile, passengers were instructed to stay in the Musterdepot located on the boat deck to ensure their safety. The firefighters remained vigilant, monitoring hot spots throughout the night to determine the best course of action for safely towing the vessel back to port. As efforts continued, the Spanish maritime rescue organization Salvamento Maritimo worked in coordination with the ferry’s operator GNV, who arranged for the tugboat VB Xerea to assist with the towing operation. The tow ship made substantial progress, successfully guiding Tenacia into Valencia’s port by 12:30 p.m. The fire reportedly ignited in one of the ferry's two Wärtsilä 12V46 main engines, each capable of delivering 12,000 kW of power. Additional technical inspections are now necessary to fully ascertain the damage once conditions allow for a thorough examination of the engine room. With tensions rising on board due to the deteriorating situation, the captain opted to evacuate the passengers while at sea. This decision was made in conjunction with the shipping company, the Capitanía Marítima de Palma, and Salvamento Maritimo. Taking advantage of favorable weather conditions, they prioritized the safety of all aboard, given the ferry was only equipped with a single emergency generator, which severely impacted essential services on the vessel. Concerns were also raised regarding an overheated trailer that posed a potential fire hazard. Passengers affected by the incident have since been supported by GNV, receiving accommodation in Valencia and compensation for clothing and personal items. However, details regarding when they will regain access to their luggage or the condition of their vehicles remain unclear.
Passengers Safely Evacuated from Disabled Ferry Tenacia Following Engine Room Fire
In a dramatic incident on July 8, the ferry 'Tenacia' experienced an engine room fire while en route from Palma to Valencia, approximately north of Ibiza. Fortunately, the emergency situation was swiftly managed by Salvamento Marítimo, enabling safe passenger evacuation. The timely arrival of the 'GNV Bridge', another vessel from the same shipping line servicing the Palma-Valencia route, facilitated the transfer of passengers to safety via the 'Salvamar Libertas'. Once this operation was completed, these individuals were returned to their departure point, Valencia. The tug 'Marta Mata' (IMO: 9429120) is expected to aid in towing the 'Tenacia' back to port. Comprehensive safety protocols were activated, launching responses from Rescue coordination centers in Palma, Barcelona, Tarragona, and Madrid. Under the guidance of the Maritime Captaincy of Palma, several maritime assets, including the 'Salvamar Acrux', 'Salvamar Libertas', and SAR vessels 'Mesana' and 'Marta Mata', were deployed. Aerial support was provided by Helimer helicopters 221, 207, and 203.
