The Teos: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On August 24, 2023, a major maritime rescue operation took place involving the SAR vessel 'Guardamar Urania', which successfully saved 236 migrants from a perilously overloaded cayuco. This dramatic incident unfolded approximately 232 miles south of Gran Canaria, where the cayuco had been found adrift and without an engine on August 23. The alert was raised by the merchant ship 'Teos', which was making its way from Las Palmas to Cape Verde. Upon spotting the disabled cayuco with its distressed passengers, the 'Teos' made the critical decision to stop and report the situation to the Las Palmas Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (CCS). Recognizing the potential danger, the 'Teos' wrapped a rope around the vessel for safety and called for further assistance. In response, the CCS promptly dispatched the 'Salvamar Urania', which reached the cayuco and rescued all 236 individuals, comprising men, women, and children, in the early hours of the morning at 2:15 a.m. The migrants were then transported safely to the port of Arguineguín, arriving around 3:15 p.m. This operation highlights the ongoing humanitarian challenges faced by migrants in perilous conditions at sea.
