Ferry Collision with Frigates Amid Typhoon Nesat in Keelung

Jul 31, 2017 09:30

In a dramatic incident on the evening of July 29, 2017, Typhoon Nesat caused the high-speed ferry 'Natchan Rera' to break free from its moorings at the East-3 wharf in Keelung, Taiwan. The vessel went adrift at approximately 11:41 p.m. and collided with the Taiwanese Navy's Knox-class frigate 'Lan-Yang (蘭陽)', which was securely docked just ahead. Within minutes, at 11:42 p.m., the ferry struck the 'Huai-Yang (淮陽)', another frigate moored alongside the 'Lan-Yang'. Following the collisions, an investigation was promptly initiated. Navy personnel onboard the 'Lan-Yang' discovered a significant crack measuring one meter along the port side of the stern, which unfortunately led to the ship taking on water. However, the crew's swift actions allowed them to patch the damage within half an hour. The 'Huai-Yang' experienced a large dent at the stern and reported five broken railings on the main deck's port side. Fortunately, both Knox-class frigates, part of Navy Flotilla 168 based in Su'ao, are expected to undergo full repairs within two weeks. The Navy is set to evaluate the repair costs and pursue compensation accordingly. In contrast, the 'Natchan Rera' sustained much more substantial damage, including holes in her hull. Primarily, this ferry operates on routes between Su'ao in Yilan County and Hualien County in eastern Taiwan, as well as between Taipei Port and Pingtan in China's Fujian Province.
