In a significant turn of events, the Iranian cargo vessels 'Bavand' and 'Termeh', which had faced nearly 50 days of detention at Brazil's Paranaguá port, have finally commenced their journey back to the Islamic Republic. This development comes in the wake of a Supreme Federal Court (STF) ruling that mandated Petrobras to supply fuel to the ships. The 'Termeh' departed around noon on July 27, 2019, heading towards another Brazilian port where it was slated to load a cargo of corn. Meanwhile, the fully loaded 'Bavand' set sail for Iran later that evening. The entire voyage is estimated to take approximately 30 days, according to reliable sources. Both vessels initially arrived in Brazil transporting urea and were scheduled to return with corn shipments destined for Iran. The 'Bavand' has already taken on around 50,000 tons of maize, while the 'Termeh' is expected to load an additional 60,000 tons. This sizable cargo is valued at about 100 million reais. The STF President, Minister Dias Toffoli, had previously dismissed a Petrobras appeal on July 24, directing the company to supply the necessary fuel. Petrobras had been reluctant to provide fuel, citing that the owner of the vessels was listed among US-sanctioned firms, expressing concerns about potential repercussions from US authorities if they proceeded with the supply. However, Toffoli clarified that Eleva Química, the Brazilian company managing the chartering of the ships, is not on the US sanctions list, thus mitigating the threat to Petrobras. He emphasized the potential adverse impact on Brazil's trade balance with Iran, a crucial importer of Brazilian corn, noting that Iran had even signaled the possibility of halting imports of corn and other Brazilian goods should the situation remain unresolved.
