Daring Rescue Operation Following 20-Meter Fall of Lifeboat from Torm Maren
On April 1, 2020, a dramatic incident unfolded off the coast of Sierra Leone when a rescue boat fell 20 meters from the Torm Maren, a tanker en route from Lagos to Gibraltar. The incident occurred as the vessel was in the process of lifting the boat from its cradle when a crane cable unexpectedly gave way. There were three individuals aboard the lifeboat at the time of the accident, including a 28-year-old woman and two men aged 40 and 26, all of whom sustained severe injuries, particularly trauma to their lumbar and pelvic regions. In a swift response, the Spanish Navy patrol ship SPS Audaz - P45 (MMSI: 224062000) arrived on the scene to provide assistance. Paramedics boarded the Torm Maren and swiftly began administering first aid to the injured parties. The health personnel and the operational security team remained with the victims throughout the night, ensuring their stability and managing their medication until they could receive more advanced medical care. The Torm Maren then set a course for Conakry, where it arrived on the afternoon of April 2. There, medical professionals prepared for the medevac of the injured individuals, who were subsequently transferred to the hospital for further treatment. The health and security team also debarked onto the patrol boat following the transfer.
