Trans Asia 8 Ferry Aground Incident Near Nasipit Resolved
On April 26, 2023, at approximately 8 p.m., the MV Trans Asia 8 encountered a grounding situation shortly after departing from the port of Nasipit, Agusan del Norte, en route to Cebu City. The ferry was carrying 124 passengers along with 51 crew members when it ran aground for a duration of two hours during its maneuver out of port. Fortunately, the Philippine Coast Guard in Nasipit permitted the vessel to continue its journey, and by April 27 at 9 a.m., the ferry successfully docked at Pier 5 in Cebu City. In response to the incident, Cebu Coast Guard Station Commander called upon Captain Oliver Alguno to file a marine protest with the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina 7). Additionally, he recommended a comprehensive underwater hull inspection to ensure the vessel's seaworthiness. Following an examination conducted by a Marina-accredited underwater surveyor, which was observed by a safety engineer from Marina 7, the MV Trans Asia 8 was cleared to resume normal operations.
