On July 20, 2012, the merchant vessel "Triton" encountered significant challenges off the coast of Mehamn due to engine cooling issues, rendering it disabled. The situation prompted the distress call to Vardø Radio at 8:40 PM, leading to a swift response from the lifeboat "Reidar von Koss," which departed from Bisho shortly thereafter at 8:50 PM. As the lifeboat navigated towards the derelict Triton, there were risks of the vessel running aground due to powerful north-easterly gales, with wave heights reaching up to 5 meters. At 9:55 PM, the crew of the Triton managed to restart the engine, thus averting a potential disaster along the coast. Despite this, the Hurtigruten vessel "Vesterålen" was instructed to remain nearby for safety. Unfortunately, at 10:05 PM, the engine issues recurred, prompting the lifeboat to maintain close proximity. By 11:25 PM, the lifeboat successfully reached the Triton and initiated towing operations towards Båtsfjord. Approximately 15 minutes later, the tow commenced, and by 5:15 AM on July 21, the Triton was safely moored in Bisho. Remarkably, while under tow, the crew performed essential repairs and restarted the engine, ultimately allowing the Triton to resume its journey at 5:30 AM, with the lifeboat on standby for any further contingencies.
