Dramatic Water Ingress Incident Involving Sheerleg Eide Lift 8

Apr 16, 2018 09:48

On April 14, 2018, at 10:39 a.m., the sheerleg crane vessel, Eide Lift 8, experienced a critical situation, suffering from water ingress in its engine room while docked at the wharf in Høylandsbygd, Halsnøy. The vessel began to sink at an alarming rate, dropping two centimeters every ten minutes, prompting immediate action from the Kvinnherad fire rescue team. With a rapid response involving five fire engines and a dedicated crew of 15 firefighters, the team managed to pump out sufficient water to stabilize the crane ship by 12:30 p.m., raising it by half a meter by 1 p.m. Further investigations revealed that the water had entered through two ballast water tanks on the port side, which were unintentionally connected to open tanks in the aft area adjacent to the engine room. GPS Atlas Mobilizes to Recover Collapsed Gangway on the Thames

Dec 20, 2011 09:07

On December 16, 2011, at 10 a.m., the iconic Tower Bridge in London was raised to facilitate the operation of the 'GPS Atlas', which is tasked with addressing the recent structural failure of the gangway leading to HMS 'Belfast'. This historic cruiser, a prized possession of the Imperial War Museum, has remained inaccessible to the public since the scaffolding-supported walkway collapsed into the Thames on November 29, 2011. In light of this incident, the museum has refrained from disclosing the anticipated duration of the closure. In response to the collapse, representatives from the museum have collaborated closely with the Port of London Authority and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to ensure that the compromised gangway poses no further risks while a comprehensive recovery strategy is formulated. Following extensive consultations, the recovery plan has been finalized and approved by both the HSE and the Port of London Authority. Efforts are now underway to implement the plan, which includes the operation of a sheerleg crane that was deployed on December 16 to extract the damaged section of the gangway from the river. Public access to the 'Belfast' will, however, remain suspended until further announcements are made.
