Mysterious WWII Device Detonates in Humber Waters
On May 7, 2020, while conducting routine maintenance dredging operations, the crew aboard the 'UKD Marlin' observed what they believe to be an undiscovered World War II bomb detonate in the Humber. The incident occurred as the crew was preparing to dredge Immingham Approaches. Suddenly, a loud explosion echoed through the area, accompanied by a significant plume of water erupting approximately 40 meters off the port side of the vessel. It is suspected that a small and ancient ordnance, long buried under layers of silt and sand, was the culprits behind this unexpected blast. Fortunately, no injuries or damage were reported among the crew members. In response to the incident, the ABP Humber’s survey team promptly conducted a thorough examination of the site to ensure safety before any further dredging activities can continue.
