Bulk Carrier Comes to Rescue Distressed Vessel Ogoi Ratz
On September 10, 2022, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) initiated an emergency response after receiving a distress call regarding the m/v 'Ogoi Ratz' from the Port Moresby Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC). To bolster their efforts, AMSA sought support from the Australian Defence Force's Search and Rescue (ADF SAR) team on September 12. A P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft from the No. 11 Squadron, stationed at RAAF Edinburgh, was dispatched to Cairns to assist with the mission near Woodlark Island. As the aircraft made its way toward Bougainville, it detected a small radar signal that turned out to be the missing vessel. Upon establishing radio communication with the 'Ogoi Ratz', it was confirmed that all four crew members on board were safe. The Poseidon then coordinated with the nearby bulk carrier 'Uni Sunshine', which was en route from Tauranga to Lanshan and positioned 24 nautical miles from the distressed vessel, which was located 70 nautical miles off the coast. Throughout the operation, the Poseidon maintained overhead surveillance and provided real-time guidance until the 'Uni Sunshine' was able to take the 'Ogoi Ratz' under tow.
