Prior to the attack, the vessel's AIS records indicated it was navigating through the Caribbean Sea since November 26. Despite the hostile environment, the 'Carney' managed to respond swiftly to both distress calls, confirming no substantial damage to either merchant ship while neutralizing another UAV en route to its vicinity.

In a late-night incident on May 16, 2020, the cargo vessel 'Unity Explorer' fell victim to a theft while docked in Douala, Cameroon. Intruders managed to break the padlock securing the forecastle store and made off with various ship’s properties. Fortunately, the vessel's crew was unharmed during this distressing violation. Following the incident, 'Unity Explorer' departed Douala on May 22, resuming its voyage after the unfortunate encounter.

On December 2, 2019, maritime rescue efforts unfolded near Tarifa, Cádiz, as Salvamento Marítimo swiftly came to the aid of a distressed crew member aboard the 'Unity Explorer'. The ship's emergency call to the Tarifa Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) came in at 9:15 a.m., reporting a serious concern for a sailor experiencing potential heart attack symptoms. Responding promptly, the 'Salvamar Arcturus' launched its operations, reaching the vessel approximately three miles southeast of Tarifa. The medical evacuation transpired efficiently, and by 10:50 a.m., the affected crew member was safely transported to the ambulance awaiting at Tarifa's port. From there, he was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for further medical attention.
