In the early hours of March 13, 2016, the cargo ship Alesia ran aground on the embankment of the Kiel Canal at kilometer 58 while traveling westbound from Kalmar to Lisboa. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. when a sudden rudder failure left the vessel unmanageable, prompting a swift response from local traffic control in Brunsbüttel, which restricted half of the canal's width for navigation to ensure safety. Other vessels were advised to navigate cautiously in a curve between Schülp and Rendsburg as they passed the site of the grounding. Despite the crew's efforts to free the ship using its own power, it became clear that external assistance was necessary. At approximately 6 a.m., the salvage tugs Stein and Kitzeberg were dispatched from Kiel to aid in the refloating operation. Successfully dislodged, the Alesia was escorted to the communal port of Rendsburg and berthed there by 10:30 a.m. After undergoing necessary investigations and repairs, the cargo vessel resumed its journey westbound at 5:15 a.m. on March 14.
