Collision in Kiel Canal: BBS Star to Undergo Lightering Operations

Aug 29, 2012 21:35

On August 29, 2012, at 6:45 AM, the cargo vessel BBS Star was involved in a collision with the Dutch freighter Snoekgracht in the Kiel Canal, specifically near the Rüsterbergen pilot station. The incident occurred shortly after BBS Star departed from Rendsburg, with the cause of the rudder malfunction still undetermined. This mishap led to the vessel veering off course and striking Snoekgracht, which suffered significant damage to its bulwark. Following an investigation conducted at the Kiel-Holtenau lock, the Snoekgracht received clearance to proceed to its destination in St. Petersburg. Meanwhile, the BBS Star incurred approximately 50 meters of hull damage along its port side, resulting in water ingress. Consequently, the ship halted its journey to Avonmouth and diverted to Brunsbüttel, where its grain cargo will be offloaded for a comprehensive inspection and lightering operations.
