General Cargo Vessel Vafa-3 Grounded on Volgo-Caspian Ship Canal

On October 1, 2023, the general cargo vessel Vafa-3, measuring 3,086 gross tons and built in 1984, encountered difficulties while navigating the Volgo-Caspian Ship Canal. The vessel was making its way from Nowshahr, Iran, to Astrakhan when it ran aground at the 153.4-kilometre mark. Reports from the Russian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) indicate that the Vafa-3 has been unable to free itself. In response to the situation, the Captain of the Port of Olya has imposed a suspension on vessel traffic in the canal near the aground vessel during nighttime hours to ensure safety. Current data from Lloyd’s List Intelligence AIS shows the Vafa-3 remains stranded at coordinates 045 04 14N, 047 41 31E, which places it approximately 43 nautical miles from Olya as of 07:03 hours today.
