Total Ends Contract with Ensco Drillship DS-7 Ahead of Schedule
In a significant development in the offshore drilling sector, Ensco has announced that Total has issued a notice for the early termination of the drillship Ensco DS-7. This termination will take effect around the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2016, reflective of Total's current well program needs. The drillship, which Total originally contracted in the fourth quarter of 2013 at a substantial day rate of approximately $610,000, will now be transitioning out of service ahead of its expected timeline. Despite this early termination, Total is still liable for daily termination fees to Ensco until November 2017, along with a demobilization fee. For the initial 90 days post-termination, particularly the early weeks of the fourth quarter in 2016, Total will be responsible for a daily termination fee aligning with the operational day rate of around $585,000. Following this period, the fee will adjust to 75% of the operating day rate through to the contract's conclusion in November 2017. Notably, any termination fees accrued by Total will be reduced during periods when Ensco successfully secures a new contract for the DS-7 from third parties up to November 2017. This development underscores the dynamic nature of offshore operations and contractual agreements in the industry.
