Rowan Drillship to Be Warm Stacked Following Early Contract Termination by Repsol
In a recent announcement from its Houston headquarters, offshore drilling company Rowan revealed plans to warm stack its drillship, the Rowan Renaissance, after Spanish oil company Repsol decided to terminate their contract prematurely. Despite this contract termination, Rowan confirmed that it will continue to receive payments from Repsol for the drillship, albeit at a slightly reduced rate. This adjusted standby payment will be less than the initial 98% of the $630,000 per day operating fee, which had been applicable since mid-March, and will remain in effect until the original contract expiration on April 22, 2017. The Rowan Renaissance had been engaged in drilling activities at the Leon well located in the Keathley Canyon, approximately 352 kilometers offshore Louisiana, in the deep-water sector of the US Gulf of Mexico.
Greenpeace Activist Injured by Own Vessel During Confrontation with Spanish Navy
On November 15, 2014, a Greenpeace protest escalated dramatically off the coast of the Canary Islands, resulting in an injury to a 23-year-old Italian activist. The incident occurred as the Spanish navy intervened in an ongoing protest against an oil exploration project, leading to a confrontation involving several Greenpeace boats. The young activist fell overboard, where she was struck by the propeller of her own vessel, causing a significant injury to her leg. The Spanish navy, believing that the activists aimed to board the 'Rowan Renaissance,' acted to disperse the three Greenpeace boats involved in the protest. Visual footage of the clash shows the activists' vessels perilously close to the 'Rowan Renaissance.'
