WElle's Narrow Escape: Grounding Incident in Azov Don Sea Canal

Oct 19, 2014 21:17

On October 15, 2014, at precisely 09:15 Moscow time, the cargo vessel 'WElle' encountered a critical steering failure, causing it to run aground at kilometer 10 of the Azov-Don Sea Canal, situated within the Taganrog Bay of the Azov Sea. This unexpected incident led to the immediate suspension of maritime traffic in the affected area. Fortunately, the situation was resolved later that day when the vessel was successfully refloated at 15:50, thanks to the assistance of a nearby tugboat. Following the refloating efforts, 'WElle' was escorted to an anchorage where repairs to the steering mechanism were promptly conducted. At the time of the grounding, the ship was carrying a significant load of 2,900 tons of scrap, bound for its next destination in the Marmara Sea at Icdas, after departing from Rostov-on-Don.

Freighter Leak Disrupts Glückstadt Port Operations

Dec 31, 2011 18:21

On December 27, 2011, a notable incident occurred when the freighter "Sormovskiy 3048" leaked approximately 20 liters of diesel fuel into the outer port of Glückstadt. Despite the presence of a black oil film noticed between the quay and the vessel, the Russian captain vehemently denied any link to the ship's hull. Following the spill, several water and oil samples were collected for analysis. The vessel had navigated from the English Channel to Glückstadt at a reduced speed of 10 km/h due to an engine failure. In response to the spill, a specialized pumping van was dispatched from Brunsbüttel to assist with containment efforts. However, the captain intended to depart the port, determined to make his way back to Russia for repairs, despite a broken crankshaft that would limit the ship's speed. As of December 31, 2011, the "Sormovskiy 3048" remained docked in Glückstadt's port.
