On the evening of January 21, 2019, at 9:35 p.m., an unfortunate fuel oil spill took place at the coal terminal quay of Ust-Luga Port during the bunkering process of the bulk carrier "Lowlands Horizon." The incident transpired while the vessel was receiving fuel from the tanker "Vanino." In a swift response, the bunkering operation was immediately halted, allowing the crew of the "Lowlands Horizon" to initiate oil recovery efforts. At approximately 11:30 p.m., two inspectors from the Ust-Luga Port Control were dispatched to evaluate the environmental impact of the spill. Initial assessments estimated that 3 to 5 cubic meters of fuel oil had spilled onto the deck and sides of the vessel, while an additional 50 to 100 kg of oil was believed to have accumulated on the ice adjacent to the ship’s hull. Authorities are currently investigating the root causes of this incident.
