On August 19, 2014, a minor oil spill occurred in the Port of Tauranga while the 'Seastar Empress' was in the process of refueling. Only approximately one litre of the oil managed to reach the water, as the spill was primarily contained. The incident unfolded around 11:30 a.m. when a leak was detected towards the conclusion of the refueling operation. In total, about 20 litres of heavy fuel were initially spilled, but quick action ensured that most of it was contained within a designated safety area surrounding the bunkering connection. The source of the leak was identified as a failure at the coupling connection linked to the Port of Tauranga's fuel lines. To ensure safety and to prevent further incidents, the hose, coupling, and connection are undergoing thorough examinations and will remain out of service until the root cause of the malfunction is determined. Mobil has taken responsibility for investigating the origins of the leak. Following proper protocols, they activated their oil spill management procedures and reported the incident to the Council's pollution hotline to address any environmental concerns promptly.
