On August 11, 2018, the "VEla," a vessel measuring 330 meters, encountered an unexpected challenge in the Indian Ocean near the Maldives when its portside anchor, complete with all 330 meters of cable, dropped inadvertently. At the time, the ship was sailing from Singapore to Damietta. Fortunately, the anchor and chain did not detach; however, they remained suspended in the water, significantly impeding the vessel’s speed, which dropped to a mere 3-6 knots, and hampering maneuverability. The "VEla" struggled through the Arabian Sea and the majority of the Gulf of Aden until assistance arrived from the Indian Navy's INS "Teg," which deployed an emergency team. With collaborative efforts, the anchor and chain were successfully recovered and secured on August 28, north of Djibouti.
