Rescue Operation Underway for Freighter Musketier: Sleeping Crew Awakened by Helicopter
In a dramatic late-night incident on August 6, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Calais detected the freighter Musketier floating aimlessly in the English Channel, dangerously close to the French coastline. The general cargo vessel, which had set sail from St. Petersburg bound for Bermeo, Spain, was reportedly navigating towards a traffic zone without responding to any VHF communications. With a full cargo of steel and the potential for disaster, the MRCC promptly alerted the Navy. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene, attempting to rouse the unresponsive crew. Despite hovering overhead, the aerial efforts proved ineffective. Consequently, a helicopter team member was lowered onto the deck of Musketier, successfully awakening both the crew and the captain. Once consciousness was restored, the crew promptly corrected the vessel's course. To prevent any further mishaps, MRCC deployed the tug Abeille Languedoc (IMO 7710525), which arrived with five gendarmes on board to ensure the crew remained alert and focused on their navigation duties.
