In a dramatic late-night incident on August 6, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Calais detected the freighter Musketier floating aimlessly in the English Channel, dangerously close to the French coastline. The general cargo vessel, which had set sail from St. Petersburg bound for Bermeo, Spain, was reportedly navigating towards a traffic zone without responding to any VHF communications. With a full cargo of steel and the potential for disaster, the MRCC promptly alerted the Navy. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene, attempting to rouse the unresponsive crew.
