On the afternoon of January 29, 2025, a distressing incident unfolded as a person fell overboard from the passenger vessel 'Victoria 1' near the island of Ulkomatala, situated in Helsinki's waters. The alarming discovery of the individual's absence came only upon the ship's arrival at the port of Helsinki, prompting concern among friends and crew. Surveillance footage captured the moment of the fall, occurring shortly after 3 p.m., revealing the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the incident. In response, a robust Search and Rescue (SAR) operation was initiated, mobilizing several patrol boats and a helicopter from the Finland Coast Guard to comb the area. In a collaborative effort, other maritime vessels in proximity were also enlisted to assist in the search. Despite thorough efforts, as twilight approached, the Coast Guard made the hard decision to halt the search shortly before 7 p.m. Their assessment indicated that the chances of finding the individual alive were bleak, compounded by the cold water temperatures and limited visibility. The decision to terminate the search reflects the harsh realities of maritime safety and the challenges faced in emergency situations.

The ferry 'Victoria I' made its way back to Tallinn on August 1, 2023, after fulfilling its role as a temporary home for Ukrainian refugees seeking safety in Scotland. The agreement between the vessel's operator and the Scottish government was established in July 2022, allowing the ship to dock in Edinburgh and provide essential accommodation. This contract officially concluded on July 11, after serving more than 1,000 Ukrainian refugees over the past year. In addition to its work in Scotland, Tallink's fleet has also provided shelter for refugees in Estonia and the Netherlands. Upon its return, the 'Victoria I' docked at Tallinn's Old Harbor, and Tallink's board plans to determine the ship's future by early September. Previously, the 'Victoria I' operated on the busy Tallinn-Stockholm route.

Displaced Ukrainians who have sought refuge aboard the 'Victoria I' in Edinburgh since last summer will soon be provided with new housing options. Over 1,000 individuals currently reside on the ferry, which has been moored at Leith port. Although the ferry's contract was extended in December, the Scottish government has announced that the arrangement will conclude on July 11. As the deadline approaches, those without alternative accommodation may find temporary shelter in hotels, with the expenses covered by the government. Additionally, some of the residents may relocate to different areas across Scotland, rather than remaining in Edinburgh.
