On the morning of August 16, Kattegatruten announced the suspension of the ferry service for the 'Dolphin Jet' in response to stringent regulations affecting navigation in the Kalundborg Fjord. The rapid ferry, which had been operational between Aarhus and Kalundborg, concluded its last voyage on the evening of August 15. Approximately three weeks earlier, a sailing permit was granted, requiring the ferry to run at a reduced speed within the fjord and to steer clear of a protected natural area, resulting in an additional distance of 11 miles. Unfortunately, this adjustment not only escalated fuel consumption due to the less-than-optimal speed but also prolonged the crossing duration by two hours. On August 15, around 70 crew members and staff were informed about the decision, with Kattegatruten aiming to secure alternative employment for 5-10 affected individuals. Currently, the 'Dolphin Jet' is docked at Aarhus Harbour, with potential plans to offer an alternative route between Aarhus and Odden. Refunds will be automatically issued to all customers who purchased tickets for the canceled sailings.

Kattegat Ruten's latest fast ferry, the 'Dolphin Jet,' is set to roll out a new schedule in just a few days amid specific operating restrictions. This vessel, which connects Aarhus and Kalundborg, is capped at a speed of 16 knots within the waters of Kalundborg Fjord. In contrast, the company's ropax vessels have a permissible speed range of 18-19 knots. While all fast ferries must obtain route and vessel approval, other ships are exempt from such requirements, reflecting the unique design and propulsion of the fast ferries. The 'Dolphin Jet' is powered by turbines, producing different noise levels compared to ships equipped with traditional screw propellers. Furthermore, the entirety of Kalundborg Fjord has been classified as a Natura 2000 area, necessitating stricter speed limitations to safeguard local wildlife, including birds, porpoises, and seals. Specifically, the ferry must reduce its speed to 12 knots near the inlet’s seabed. Since its launch on July 21, the 'Dolphin Jet' has been operating two daily departures from both Aarhus and Kalundborg, seven days a week, to gauge passenger demand. A revised timetable is expected to be revealed on August 13, with the current crossing time being approximately two hours.

The anticipated approval for the 'Dolphin Jet' ferry service on the Kalundborg to Aarhus route has faced yet another setback, with officials pushing the timeline to at least July 8. This delay is attributed to ongoing concerns regarding wave generation in the Kalundborg Fjord. During a meeting held on July 2, both the Nature Agency and the Coastal and Maritime Authority highlighted the need for further investigations into the ferry's environmental impact before granting their approval. In response to this postponement, Kattegat Ruten has announced full refunds for all previously purchased tickets. In light of the situation, the company is exploring alternate routes, specifically between Aarhus and Odden. Since Odden is already serviced by existing fast ferry services, Kattegat Ruten anticipates a smoother approval process there. Nevertheless, the company remains committed to establishing the Kalundborg port as its primary vessel docking point in Zealand.
