Swinoujscie Port Incident: Altamar's Steering Failure Leads to Collision

Sep 14, 2015 09:42

On the morning of September 12, 2015, the vessel 'Altamar,' which had just arrived from Flushing, experienced a critical steering malfunction while navigating towards Swinoujscie port. This unfortunate mechanical failure resulted in a collision with the moored bunker tanker 'Palica,' which was alongside the ferry 'Baltivia' as it was in the process of receiving bunker fuel. The 'Palica' sustained significant damage to its superstructure and bulwark due to the impact. Meanwhile, the 'Altamar,' carrying a cargo of cellulose, reported a hull breach above the waterline after the incident. Following the allision, the 'Altamar' successfully docked at the Euro Terminal in Wolin at 9:15 a.m. The bunker tanker 'Palica' later relocated to Szczecin on September 13. Fortunately, the ferry 'Baltivia' was unharmed during the collision.

Emergency Response to Rudder Malfunction Aboard Altamar Near Maas Lock

Feb 19, 2014 10:51

On February 18, 2014, the vessel 'Altamar' encountered a critical rudder failure shortly after departing from Rotterdam at 10:40 a.m. The incident occurred near the Maas lock, specifically on the Rozenburg side. Following the malfunction, the 'Altamar' was unable to navigate and had to anchor off a dam as an emergency measure. Within 20 minutes, the tug 'RPA 12' arrived on the scene, providing immediate assistance. Soon after, the 'ZP Chalone' arrived and successfully connected to the stern of the 'Altamar,' securing the vessel while awaiting further help. A mere 10 minutes later, the tug 'Limburgia' joined the operation, anchoring at the bow of the 'Altamar' to ensure stability. It was reported that the anchor chain of the 'Altamar' became twisted during the efforts to reposition the ship. Ultimately, the tugboats successfully towed the vessel to the Northern Waal Port in Rotterdam, where it was safely moored at 1:15 p.m. For more details and photos of this naval incident, visit the Dutch reports here: [Tugspotters Report 1](http://www.tugspotters.com/site/content/2014/02/zp-chalone-en-limburgia-schieten-altamar-te-hulp/) and [Tugspotters Report 2](http://www.tugspotters.com/site/content/2014/02/sleepboot-assistentie-aan-de-altamar-18-2-2014/).
