Gun-Wielding Intruders Attack Bulk Carrier 'Waddi Feran' in Straits of Malacca

In a shocking maritime incident, a group of five armed intruders stormed the bulk carrier 'Waddi Feran' early in the morning of July 16, 2024, at approximately 2:30 a.m. The attack unfolded in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS) at the coordinates 1° 6'N 01° 103.43'2 E, not far from Pulau Takong Light and around 1.3 nautical miles within the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS). Thankfully, there were no injuries reported among the crew members during the ordeal. Following the incident, the ship's master took immediate action by notifying Singapore Vessel Traffic Information Systems, which led to the initiation of a safe navigational broadcast to alert other vessels in the vicinity. Upon the vessel's arrival at the anchorage, the Singapore Police Coast Guard conducted a thorough on-board inspection; however, no suspects were apprehended. The maritime community remains vigilant as authorities continue to address security concerns within these vital shipping lanes.

The bulk carrier Wadi Feran, which had been carrying a substantial 50,141 tons of imported clinker, has been released from its arrest at the outer anchorage of Chittagong, Bangladesh. The vessel was detained on May 26, 2019, following a High Court order linked to a legal dispute. Having arrived on May 8, the Wadi Feran successfully offloaded its cargo, designated for local cement manufacturers, before the legal issues arose. Following the resolution of the litigation, the ship was cleared for departure and set sail from the port on June 21.
