The Indian Navy has successfully averted an attempted hijacking by Somali pirates targeting a Greek cargo ship in the notorious waters of the Gulf of Aden, as reported on Friday. The Indian Defense Ministry announced that INS Godavari promptly responded to a distress signal from the MV Elikanos earlier on Saturday, while providing escort to four other vessels navigating the perilous maritime region off the Somali coastline. Upon receiving the call for assistance from the Greek ship, a helicopter was swiftly dispatched to locate the small boat utilized by the pirates. Additionally, a specialized team of Marine commandos was sent to board the attackers' dinghy. Faced with the imminent arrival of the Navy, the pirates abandoned the Greek vessel, discarding their weapons and ammunition into the ocean before fleeing. Notably, the operation enjoyed the support of the German naval ship Niedersachsen. Following the successful intervention, INS Godavari resumed its escort duties. Since its deployment in anti-piracy operations on May 25, the frigate has provided secure passage to nearly 219 vessels of diverse nationalities. Just last month, it safeguarded the movement of the Pakistani ship, MV Islamabad, which had a crew composed entirely of 38 Pakistani nationals.
