A search and rescue operation has been initiated off the Central Coast following the disappearance of a crew member from the bulk carrier 'Western Marine'. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. on April 15, 2020, while the vessel was situated around 60 kilometers east of Bateau Bay, preparing to enter the Port of Newcastle. It wasn't until 6:30 a.m. that the crew realized one of their colleagues was missing. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has taken charge of the coordinated search efforts, deploying its Melbourne-based Challenger search and rescue jet along with multiple helicopters and NSW Water Police. The search is concentrated over an area of approximately 130 square kilometers throughout the day. As of now, the bulk carrier remains positioned about 55 kilometers south-east of Lake Macquarie. Marine Rescue services have issued alerts to nearby vessels, urging them to remain vigilant and keep an eye out for the missing crew member. The 'Western Marine' was en route from Korea and was scheduled to dock in Newcastle on April 16.
