Tanker Whitstar Rescued After Electrical Failure Near Penmarc'h
On August 3, 2017, the CROSS Etel authority in Morbihan received an urgent distress signal from the tanker "Whitstar." At approximately 3:07 a.m., the vessel experienced a severe electrical malfunction while navigating west of Penmarc'h Point, having set sail from Flushing and en route to Ferrol. With eight crew members on board and carrying over 2,500 tons of hydrocarbons, the ship was left adrift due to a complete loss of propulsion. In response to the situation, the emergency tugboat "Abeille Bourbon" departed from the port of Camaret at 6:15 a.m. By 8:00 a.m., the tug had reached the distressed tanker. Acting on directives from the Maritime Prefect of the Atlantic, the owner of the Whitstar was called to address the troubling situation by noon. Fortunately, later that morning, enough power was restored to the ship's propulsion system, allowing it to head towards Brest for comprehensive repairs. For safety measures, however, the Whitstar was ultimately taken in tow by the Abeille Bourbon. The tow safely arrived at Brest in the evening, with the vessel moored at the port's anchorage around midnight. Currently, the crew awaits assessments from onboard experts to determine whether repairs can be conducted at the port or if the ship requires docking for service.
