Nestor Vessel Aground Incident in Limerick
On November 24, 2013, the cargo ship Nestor found itself aground shortly after departing the docks at Limerick. The vessel, loaded with scrap metal, ran aground at approximately 10:30 p.m., becoming stuck in the mud between Limerick Port and Barringtons Pier. Fortunately, there was no environmental damage reported as a result of the grounding. The duty harbour master promptly activated the Shannon Foynes Port Company's multi-purpose workboat, Multicat Shannon 1, to assist in refloating the Nestor. However, efforts were hindered by an ebb tide, making the initial attempt unsuccessful. In response, the tugboat Celtic Rebel was dispatched from Foynes. After a successful operation, the Nestor was refloated around 11 a.m. on November 25 and continued its journey downstream to Foynes. A thorough inspection will be conducted by Port State Control upon arrival to assess the vessel for any potential damages. Although no immediate issues were identified, Shannon Foynes Port Company is set to evaluate the area where the grounding occurred to check for any additional siltation and will take appropriate remedial actions if necessary. The Nestor is expected to depart for Barreiro on November 26, pending clearance.
